Who this service is for

  • Multi-location retailers comparing performance across stores
  • Shopify merchants who also sell in a physical store
  • Wholesalers and distributors managing catalogues and pricing tiers
  • Businesses running a POS alongside a separate ecommerce platform
  • Warehousing and logistics operations moving orders between systems by hand

Common problems it addresses

  • Online stock levels do not match what is actually on the shelf
  • The same product is set up differently in each system
  • Orders are exported, reformatted and imported manually every day
  • Click & Collect orders arrive without clear store allocation
  • Tracking numbers are copied from a carrier portal into the store platform
  • Head office cannot compare sales, basket size and stock across locations without a manual spreadsheet
Independence statement

ByteX provides independent integration and workflow consulting. References to third-party products do not imply endorsement, certification or an official partnership unless expressly stated.

Capabilities

What this service covers

  • Independent POS workflow consulting Review how your point of sale is actually used day to day, and where the process rather than the software is causing the problem.
  • Retail Express workflow assistance Help with workflow design, data preparation and integration approaches around Retail Express, using its documented capabilities.
  • Shopify development and integration Theme work, app configuration, storefront changes, and integrations built on the documented Shopify Admin and webhook APIs.
  • Product and inventory synchronisation Establish a source of truth, then design a controlled sync with validation, logging and exception handling.
  • Order-flow automation Move orders from the storefront into fulfilment and accounting processes without manual re-entry.
  • Click & Collect workflows Capture pickup preferences, validate store selection and pass structured information into the fulfilment process.
  • Fulfilment and shipping integrations Connect supported carrier and third-party logistics platforms so despatch and tracking information flows automatically.
  • Product imports and data cleanup Validate, deduplicate and transform catalogue data before it reaches a live system.
  • Multi-location reporting Consolidate authorised data into one model so locations can be compared on consistent definitions.
  • Barcode and catalogue workflows Sort out barcode, SKU and category structures so scanning and reporting behave predictably.
  • Loyalty integration assessment Assess what a loyalty platform can and cannot integrate with before you commit to it.
  • Custom middleware Where no off-the-shelf connector fits, build a small documented service that does exactly the required job.
  • API and webhook development Build and consume APIs and webhooks with authentication, retries and failure alerting.
  • Staff process documentation Write down the resulting process so it survives staff turnover.

Practical use cases

What this looks like in a working business

Each use case describes the problem, the approach and the limits, so you can judge whether it matches your situation before you get in touch.

Click & Collect workflow

Business problem
Customers can select pickup at checkout, but store allocation and order information are unclear once the order arrives.
ByteX approach
Capture the pickup location and customer details as structured data at checkout, validate the selection against what that store can actually fulfil, and route the order into the fulfilment process with the information staff need to act on it.
Expected outcome
Clearer store fulfilment, because each order arrives with the location already determined

Multi-store sales dashboard

Business problem
Management cannot easily compare sales, basket size, stock and performance across locations.
ByteX approach
Consolidate authorised data into a single reporting model with agreed metric definitions, then provide filterable dashboards that management can use directly rather than requesting a report.
Expected outcome
A consistent management view that all locations are measured against

Product catalogue cleanup and import

Business problem
Product names, categories, barcodes, pricing or descriptions are inconsistent.
ByteX approach
Validate, transform and prepare catalogue data as a repeatable process: check structure and formats, identify duplicates, normalise categories and units, and produce a clean import file plus an exception report of what needs a human decision.
Expected outcome
Cleaner product information across the systems that use it

Order and fulfilment automation

Business problem
Staff manually transfer orders or tracking information between ecommerce, warehouse and carrier systems.
ByteX approach
Connect the supported systems so orders flow out and fulfilment information flows back automatically, using APIs, webhooks or scheduled processing depending on what each platform provides, with logging and failure alerting throughout.
Expected outcome
Reduced data entry on every order despatched

Typical systems

Platforms this work usually touches

This is an indicative list, not a guarantee of integration. What is achievable with any given platform depends on your subscription, the available API and the vendor's terms, and is confirmed during the review stage.

  • Shopify and Shopify POS
  • Retail Express and other cloud POS platforms
  • WooCommerce and other ecommerce platforms
  • Inventory and warehouse management systems
  • Carrier and third-party logistics platforms
  • Xero, MYOB and other accounting platforms
  • SQL Server, Azure SQL and reporting tools
  • Microsoft 365 and the Power Platform

Delivery process

How a project runs

  1. Understand

We talk through the business problem and how the work is done today — who touches it, how often, and where it goes wrong. No obligation to proceed.

  2. Review

We identify the systems involved, confirm what their APIs and permissions actually allow, and set out requirements, risks and options. Some ideas are ruled out at this stage, and that is a useful outcome.

  3. Build

We configure or develop the agreed solution against a written scope, with validation, logging and error handling built in rather than added later.

  4. Improve

We test with your data, document how it works, hand over to your team, and agree what planned improvements or maintenance make sense.

Important limitations

What to know before you commit

These constraints are stated up front because finding them out midway through a project is expensive for everybody.

  • Not every POS platform offers an API. Some provide only scheduled exports, some restrict access to particular subscription tiers, and some do not permit third-party integration at all. What is achievable is confirmed against your specific platform and plan during the review stage.
  • Real-time synchronisation is not always available or advisable. Where a platform supports only periodic exports, the honest answer is a scheduled process with a defined interval, not an implied instant sync.
  • Historical data quality limits what reporting can show. If products have been set up inconsistently for years, cleanup is a scoped piece of work in its own right.
  • Rate limits, webhook reliability and vendor maintenance windows affect integration design, and are accounted for rather than ignored.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can ByteX integrate with our POS platform?

That depends on the platform and your subscription. The first step is checking what API, webhook or export capability is genuinely available to your account. Some integrations are straightforward, some need middleware, and some are not possible. You will be told which of those applies before any build work is quoted.

Which system should hold the correct stock figure?

That is a business decision as much as a technical one, and it is worth deciding deliberately. Usually one system is nominated as the source of truth for stock and another for pricing. Letting two systems write freely to each other is the most common cause of the problem you are trying to fix.

Do you work with Shopify themes as well as integrations?

Yes. Storefront changes, catalogue structure and integration work often need to be considered together, particularly where the store also supports a physical location.

Can you clean up our product data before we migrate?

Yes. Catalogue cleanup and controlled import preparation is a common standalone project, and it is usually far cheaper to clean data before a migration than to correct it afterwards.

Product and pricing update workflow

Business problem
Product information is maintained in multiple spreadsheets or systems.
ByteX approach
Create an approved master-data workflow: one place where a product change is entered, validated against agreed rules, approved, and then distributed to each supported destination with a record of what changed and when.
Expected outcome
Fewer duplicate updates, because the change is entered once

Business problem
Customers need to browse products, but full ecommerce checkout is unnecessary or inappropriate.
ByteX approach
Build a searchable, filterable product catalogue fed from an appropriate source, with an enquiry or quote request against each product instead of a checkout.

Better product discovery without the cost and obligation of a full store
